The hometown of the Fire Dragon from the Cloud is located in Sanyi in Taiwan. This small rustic Hakka town with beautiful scenery and foggy environment allows Fire Dragon from the Cloud to keep the simple Hakka culture and tradition. Rice is the staple food for Hakka people, not to mention that straw is the material which can be got easily. In former days, local people used straws, haulms, straw ropes and bamboo chips to make straw dragons and entertain themselves during the slack season. Furthermore, the straw dragon was stuck by full of incense sticks and the smoke of the incense rose like clouds. As a result, the name of the Fire Dragon from the Cloud spread far and wide and a series of folk customs were developed. The Fire Dragon from the Cloud consists of keeping safe, blessing and avoiding evil spirits.
Inspired and founded by Shuangtan Community, promoted by Sanyi Tourism and Cultural Development Association and other non-governmental organizations, the Fire Dragon from the Cloud Festival was recommended as one of the twelve Hakka Festivals by Hakka Affairs Council from 2008 to 2016.
